Taste.Com
Getting children actively involved in growing their own vegetables/plants and flowers gives them a sense of association, connection and responsibility when it comes to nature.
With the above in mind, my friends and I came up with an initiative involving vegetarian food and the preparation and cooking of it at one of our homes each month. To make it fun for the kids the day is themed. Food is rich in culture and tradition and in line with this the kids collaboratively decide on different theme and cuisine each month. They dress up in appropriate attire (mexican/african/asian) and prepare a dish, always using at least one item from the garden (this month it is tomatoe's). The children that attend are raised vegetarian, however there are several families that aren't but have asked to attend as they see the benefits.
For Social Resource 1B, I decided Taste.com to be the best resource to use because it has a "Menu Planner" application. This feature would enable the creation of a delicious menu for the day. In addition, it can be used by others in my group to create menus for future events. It also has a feature that lets your guests preview and comment on the menu (allowing changes if need be).
Taste.com is a website that provideds thousands of recipes for free. What impressed me most was the fantastic variety of recipes to suit every occassion. I used the search engine to review Mexican recipes (simply typed in Mexican), and to my delight it produced pages and pages of recipes - BRILLIANT! I also liked the drop and drag widget that is used to create your menu and the comments section which lets you review other peoples views on what the final product turned out like. Next month we are going to teach the children how to use this application, to encourage further involvement in the co-ordination of the day and hopefully arm them with a greater sense of responsibility.
I experienced x2 challenges with Taste.com. Initially I didn't realise you had to be registered to access the applications. The second issue was at the end when I couldn't work out how to link the planner to my yola website. I have included notes on how to do both of these (see below).
Please note that to view my menu planner you will need to first register as a new user and then log in to the mytaste website. This is also necessary to be able to access the website for your own activities.
Refer to link below to view "My Menu Planner". I have also included instructions on how to use Taste.com.

CONGRATULATIONS! You have now successfully created a menu plan. At the base of your "Menu Plan" page you will see a link to invite your friends to view and make comments on your menu planner. This is great to share with those attending the event and to get their input and thoughts on the menu selection.
GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY!
